The mission of World Land Trust-US (WLT-US) is to buy and protect habitat for rare and endangeredÊspecies in the American Tropics. "We work through local partners who own and manage private reserves forÊthe conservation of nature." explains Richard Moore,ÊDirector of Operations. "These are private reserves,Êowned by local NGOs. Each one is targeted on a particularÊspecies that is in danger of imminent extinction. So the hope is to protect enough habitat for a breedingÊpopulation to survive, along with all the other biodiversity.ÊA reserve that protects a rare bird may also be homeÊfor a rare crystal frog, an orchid unknown to science, and a jaguar. WeÕre the Red Cross of biodiversity inÊLatin America."

DonationsÊto World Land Trust-US go directly to assist local organizationsÊto buy land to protect critically endangered species, halt species extinction, and preserve biodiversity. In 2007 WLT-US supported conservation of the most endangered species and critical habitats in six Latin American countries. With many more projects still in development, they haveÊgranted more than $850,000 to local organizations toÊbuy and manage reserves of exceptional biodiversityÊvalue.ÊOften these lands are acquired for $100 perÊacre or less! By working exclusively through local conservationÊorganizations, WLT-US is able to keep the size of theirÊstaff and overhead costs extremely low and thereforeÊdirect nearly all donated funds to the places whereÊthey can have the greatest impact - to their partnersÊin the field.
